The European Union formally signed its milestone The Markets in Crypto-assets Regulation (MiCA) on Wednesday.

The legislation was signed by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the Swedish Minister for Rural Affairs, Peter Kullgren, along with a separate anti-money laundering law that requires crypto providers to verify the identity of their customers when transferring funds.

MiCA will come into effect a few weeks after being published in the EU Official Journal in June. Its provisions, such as providing licenses to cryptocurrency exchanges and wallet providers to operate within the 27 EU member states, and requiring stablecoin issuers to hold adequate reserves, will take effect 12 to 18 months from now.
