The Russian State Duma has approved a law that will introduce a digital ruble, according to reports by the Russian news agency TASS. Once President Putin signs the legislation, Russia will become the largest country to officially adopt a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Discussions surrounding the introduction of a digital currency has been ongoing in Russia for several years. Back in November 2021, Reuters reported on a pilot project scheduled to commence in 2022. Over a year earlier in October 2020, the Bank of Russia published a consultation paper that explored the concept of the digital ruble. As outlined in the consultation paper, the Russian central bank will operate and organize the digital ruble platform.
