Today, Forbes reported that Visa has applied to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a patent to create blockchain-based digital currency on a centralized computer.

The patent, dubbed as “Digital Fiat Currency,” covers not only digital dollars but also other digitized central bank currencies such as euros and yen. Any central bank currency will be able to turn into digital money if Visa successfully obtains the patent.

Per Forbes, Senior Counsel at Willkie Farr, J. Christopher Giancarlo, remarked Visa’s patent application as, “This patent filing is evidence the private sector is very much at work on the future of money.”
