Citizen’s SafeTrace function to combat COVID-19 infection is receiving vast criticism of invading users’ privacy.

The Citizen App, which provides two million users with location-based safety alerts, launched a new contact-tracing function, dubbed as SafeTrace, to track those who COVID-19 patients may have contacted when contagious. The new SafeTrace function utilizes GPS and Bluetooth tracking, which gave rise to privacy concerns.

CoinDesk reported that Ángel Díaz, counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice in New York, remarked, “GPS data tracking a person’s movements is very revealing, and difficult to effectively anonymize.”
