According to Reuters, Apple is considering using artificial intelligence to speed up the design of its custom core chips. Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji, stated that using cutting-edge tools is crucial for chip design, with Electronic Design Automation (EDA) companies playing a vital role in supporting the complexity of their chip designs. Generative AI technology has the potential to significantly increase productivity by completing more design work in a shorter amount of time. However, Apple has reportedly been using AI to some extent in its designs for years, with third-party EDA companies leveraging AI and machine learning in chip design. Meanwhile, software giant Microsoft plans to lay off thousands of employees as it increases AI investments to streamline its workforce and keep up with competitors. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also mentioned this week that the introduction of generative AI and agent AI in the coming years will reduce their workforce.
