According to reports from Cointelegraph, a criminal court in Brussels, Belgium, has sentenced three kidnappers involved in a cryptocurrency-related kidnapping case to 12 years in prison each. The kidnappers had kidnapped the wife of local cryptocurrency entrepreneur Stéphane Winkel in December 2024 and demanded cryptocurrency ransom. They are also required to pay at least 1 million euros in civil compensation to the victim. The mastermind behind the case is still at large. Although the victim was rescued by the police in time, they suffered severe physical and mental trauma, leading to the Winkel couple being forced to relocate. Winkel is the founder of the cryptocurrency education platform Crypto Académie, with a YouTube channel boasting 40,000 subscribers. He stated that he will adjust his content strategy post-incident, focusing on security education rather than wallet operational demonstrations.
