According to sources, as US President Trump postponed the tariff deadline to August 1 and adjusted the tariff rates for countries like Japan and South Korea, several export-dependent economies in Asia have gained more negotiation time but little relief. This extension keeps multiple countries in the crosshairs of the US government's tariff onslaught. Complicating negotiations further, the US may impose industry-specific tariffs on key sectors like automobiles, chips, and pharmaceuticals, which are economic pillars for many Asian countries.
James Halse, CEO and CIO of Senjin Capital, stated that if these tariffs persist, it could significantly impact Japanese companies exporting to the US, especially automakers. These negative effects could potentially ripple through the supply chain, affecting Japanese suppliers who do not export to the US but provide goods to these companies.
