According to reports from Japan's Asahi Shimbun on Tuesday, the ruling coalition in Japan may lose its majority in the Senate election on July 20, adding to political instability risks as Japan seeks to reach a trade agreement with the United States. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party, and its coalition partner Komeito are projected to win around 35 seats in Sunday's election, falling short of the 50 seats the LDP needs to maintain its majority. The report is based on phone and online surveys of voters conducted from July 13 to 14, as well as nationwide surveys by the newspaper. Abe's government has seen a decline in support due to rising living costs, including a surge in the price of staple food rice.
