In a breaking news development, the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly has approved a comprehensive constitutional reform allowing for unlimited presidential reelection, effectively enabling President Nayib Bukele to continue in power beyond his current term. The Salvadoran legislature stated that Bukele's Nuevas Ideas party and its allies passed five reform proposals with a vote of 57 to 3, which also extends the presidential term from five to six years and eliminates the runoff vote. Opponents have warned that this move centralizes power and threatens the democratic system, as these changes remove the term limits that have long constrained executive power. Nuevas Ideas party legislator Ana Figueroa proposed ending Bukele's current term two years early to align presidential and congressional elections on the same schedule. If approved, Bukele's current term would end on June 1, 2027, instead of June 1, 2029.
