According to Protos, a 60-year-old cryptocurrency fugitive wanted for a $13 million cryptocurrency scam was arrested in Seoul on August 22, 2025. The man was stopped by police for littering a cigarette and attempted to bribe his way out of further questioning. Police intercepted the man in Seoul's Gwanyang-gu district as he tried to hail a taxi, pleading with officers to let him go. He refused to provide identification and attempted to flee, ultimately being apprehended. Investigations revealed his involvement in a cryptocurrency scam totaling 17.7 billion Korean won (approximately $12.6 million) affecting around 1,300 victims from 2018 to 2019. The man currently faces 10 charges including assault and fraud, has been on the run since 2020, and is now detained by the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office.
