In a recent announcement, the Singapore Police Force revealed data on fraud and cybercrime for the first half of 2025, highlighting emerging trends involving cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrency-related scams accounted for 17.9% of total fraud losses, with the top three currencies in terms of losses being Tether (approximately 46.8 million Singapore dollars), Bitcoin (approximately 20 million Singapore dollars), and Ethereum (approximately 7.6 million Singapore dollars), collectively representing 91.2% of cryptocurrency losses. Most cryptocurrency victims were between 30 and 49 years old, falling prey to scams related to job opportunities, investments, and impersonation of government officials. Many victims were lured into opening cryptocurrency accounts by scammers, while others fell victim to phishing links or were tricked into revealing their mnemonic phrases. (Lianhe Zaobao)
