According to Fortune magazine, a revised lawsuit filed by the law firm Greenbaum Olbrantz on Tuesday revealed that Ashita Mishra, the core suspect in the Coinbase data breach, a former TaskUs outsourcing company employee, had over 10,000 customers' sensitive information stored on his phone.
Since September 2024, Mishra systematically stole confidential data such as customers' social security numbers and bank account information, selling each screenshot for $200 to hacker organizations. Mishra and his accomplices in India formed a 'precision collusion network,' taking 200 screenshots of customer accounts daily, affecting 69,000 users, with hackers using this to deceive users into losing up to $400 million in cryptocurrency.
TaskUs recently accused internal Coinbase employees of involvement in the breach, but without specific evidence. A Coinbase spokesperson stated that they have terminated their partnership with TaskUs, strengthened supervision, fully compensated users, and established a $20 million reward fund to track down the criminals. TaskUs stated that they continue to enhance security protocols and training, without commenting on the lawsuit.
