President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, May 28 which would allow social media companies to be held legally responsible for false or defamatory posts on their sites, according to reporting by the New York Times.

A wave of cryptocurrency Youtubers spoke out against the platform for taking down crypto-related content, cointelegraph.com reported last year. It is unclear whether the order would aid or inflame this issue.

Trump's order comes after Twitter flagged some of the President's tweets about mail-in voting with fact-check reminders. Legal experts interviewed by the Times are doubtful that the order will go into effect because it would require reinterpreting Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a move which will likely be challenged by the courts.
