According to Cointelegraph, Bhutan is migrating its sovereign identity system from Polygon to Ethereum, allowing its nearly 800,000 residents to verify their identities and access government services.

Ethereum Foundation Chair Aya Miyaguchi revealed that the integration with Ethereum has been successfully completed, with the migration of all resident identity credentials expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026. Miyaguchi, along with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, attended the launch ceremony, joined by Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk.

Prior to this, Bhutan had been operating its national identity system on Polygon since August 2024, previously using Hyperledger Indy. Brazil and Vietnam are among the few countries that have partially integrated blockchain-based sovereign identity solutions.
