SpaceX, Elon Musk's aerospace company, became the first private entity to launch astronauts into space on 3:22 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, May 30, according to reporting by the The New York Times.

The Falcon 9 rocket carrying a Crew Dragon capsule will carry two NASA astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, to the International Space Station and is set to arrive on Sunday morning.

The successful launch means that NASA will likely stop paying Russia's space program to send the agency's astronauts into space and turn to private companies like SpaceX instead, The New York Times wrote.
