According to reports, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will hold a roundtable discussion on cryptocurrency, financial monitoring, and privacy on December 15. Zooko Wilcox, founder of the cryptocurrency privacy project Zcash, will participate. Analysts believe that the SEC may evaluate the weight it gives to cryptocurrency privacy projects in its rule-making process during this meeting. If consensus is reached that zero-knowledge proofs can meet compliance obligations, this flexibility may be incorporated into the rules for digital asset brokers, alternative trading systems, and custodians. If the meeting divides into two camps - "privacy is a right" and "privacy facilitates crime" - the SEC may continue with its existing monitoring-focused framework, potentially leading privacy advocates to legal action.
