According to The Block, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced on Friday that a 23-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with committing phishing scams, stealing around $16 million worth of cryptocurrency from about 100 Coinbase users, facing 31 charges. Ronald Specs, a resident of Sheepshead Bay, is charged with grand larceny and money laundering. Prosecutors allege that Specs impersonated a Coinbase representative to contact victims, warning them of hacking risks to their assets. He is accused of deceiving users into transferring assets to a new wallet secretly controlled by him, then laundering the funds through cryptocurrency mixers, exchange services, and gambling platforms.
