Danish Tax Minister Criticizes Polymarket for Political and War Betting, Considers Restricting Operations in Denmark

Danish Tax Minister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen publicly expressed strong dissatisfaction with the prediction market platform Polymarket for offering betting contracts related to war and geopolitical events, and stated that she is considering restricting or even shutting down the platform's operations in Denmark. Polymarket, currently valued at over $8 billion, allows users to bet on various events using encrypted assets, including highly sensitive topics such as 'Ukraine ceasefire,' 'Trump's acquisition of Greenland,' and 'individuals related to the Epstein files.' Market data from BT.dk shows bets of approximately 376 million Danish krone on the Ukraine ceasefire event and around 33 million Danish krone on 'Trump taking over Greenland.' Halsboe-Jørgensen pointed out that in her view, the platform 'uses others' misfortunes as a betting platform,' especially concerning contracts related to war and conflict, which she finds concerning. She emphasized that betting on death and destruction, and conducting transactions with cryptocurrency, goes completely against her values. She stressed that if Danish users engage in such betting, involving issues of national sovereignty and others' safety, the government has a responsibility to take action. The report noted that Danish regulators are currently assessing whether Polymarket violates national laws and are exploring ways to restrict its accessibility in Denmark through regulation or banning.
