According to the US Department of Justice, two American men, Ryan Goldberg (40) from Georgia and Kevin Martin (36) from Texas, have admitted to deploying the ALPHV BlackCat ransomware to attack multiple targets in the US from April to December 2023. Both men, who work in the cybersecurity industry, paid a ransom split of 20% to the ALPHV BlackCat administrator to obtain the ransomware. After successfully extorting approximately $1.2 million in Bitcoin from a victim, the three individuals split 80% of the ransom and laundered the money through various means. The two defendants are scheduled to be sentenced on March 12, 2026, with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
