According to reports from Chainalysis, illegal activities in the cryptocurrency field have significantly increased in 2025, with illicit organizations now operating large-scale on-chain infrastructure to help transnational criminal networks access goods and services, and launder their illicit cryptocurrency gains. Data shows that illegal cryptocurrency transactions in 2025 reached at least $154 billion, a 162% increase from the previous year, mainly driven by a 694% surge in amounts received by sanctioned entities. Even if the amounts received by sanctioned entities remain stable compared to the previous year, 2025 is still set to be a record year for cryptocurrency crime, as activities in most illegal crime categories have increased. Additionally, stablecoins dominate the illegal transaction space, currently accounting for 84% of all illegal transaction volume.
