According to reports, due to spreading protests and a historic low in the rial exchange rate, the Iranian government implemented a nationwide internet shutdown today, affecting around 7 million cryptocurrency users.
TRM Labs data shows that the total cryptocurrency flow within Iran from January to July 2025 was approximately $3.7 billion. In the current shutdown environment, Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley suggests using Bitcoin as a means of storing wealth. Feasible offline trading solutions include: Starlink satellite internet has been activated domestically, providing high-speed connectivity; Blockstream satellite network supports broadcasting Bitcoin data globally.
Furthermore, the decentralized communication service Bitchat, based on a Bluetooth mesh network, has been downloaded over 1.4 million times since its release, supporting the transfer of transaction data between mobile phones. The Darkwire project developed by Cyb3r17 uses long-range radio technology to create a mesh network for transmitting Bitcoin transactions in offline environments. South African developer Kgothatso Ngako's Machankura supports users in sending and receiving Bitcoin via telecommunications networks rather than the internet. These offline solutions ultimately require connected devices to upload transactions for blockchain confirmation.
