Storm was convicted in August 2025 for operating an unlicensed money transfer business and is facing up to five years in prison. Buterin emphasized in his message that privacy tools are essential defenses against systemic data exploitation and revealed his multiple uses of the software to support human rights charities. As of January 2026, Roman Storm's legal defense fund has raised over $6.39 million in 2025. Previously, Buterin donated 50 ETH worth around $170,000 in December 2024.
