In a recent tweet, Vitalik Buterin expressed his support for Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm. Storm was convicted in August 2025 for operating an unlicensed money transfer business and is facing up to five years in prison. Buterin emphasized in his message that privacy tools are essential defenses against systemic data exploitation and revealed his multiple uses of the software to support human rights charities. As of January 2026, Roman Storm's legal defense fund has raised over $6.39 million in 2025. Previously, Buterin donated 50 ETH worth around $170,000 in December 2024. The Ethereum Foundation also donated $500,000 in 2025 and pledged a matching donation of up to $750,000 for community contributions. Global law enforcement actions against privacy encryption tools are escalating, with the founder of Samourai Wallet sentenced to four to five years in prison in November 2025.
