According to The Block, US Congress members Maxine Waters, Sean Casten, and Brad Sherman sent a letter to SEC Chairman Paul Atkins on Thursday, demanding an explanation for the agency's suspension of multiple crypto enforcement cases, including the lawsuit against Tron founder Justin Sun.
In the letter, lawmakers pointed out that since early 2025, the SEC has dismissed over ten crypto-related cases, including those against Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken, coinciding with a surge in political donations from the industry, raising concerns about a 'pay-to-play' scheme. The letter mentioned that crypto companies donated at least $85 million to President Trump's reelection campaign, while the companies whose cases were dismissed had donated at least $1 million to Trump's inauguration. They specifically highlighted the Sun case, which has been on hold for 11 months, signaling potential selective enforcement and political influence that could impact accountability. Legislators also separately issued a document preservation request, asking the SEC to provide all communication records related to the decision to suspend the Sun case.
