Law enforcement agencies in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have jointly launched a multinational operation named 'Operation Atlantic' to target 'approval-phishing' scams aimed at crypto users. The Ontario Securities Commission stated that these scams typically involve pop-ups and prompts disguised as legitimate applications or services, leading users to authorize malicious wallet permissions. Once authorized, attackers can take control of the wallet and transfer assets. Data shows that crypto scams generated at least around $14 billion in illicit revenue in 2025, with the total scale expected to reach close to $17 billion as more wallets involved are identified. Law enforcement agencies point out that current scam activities increasingly rely on social engineering, AI-generated content, and 'Phishing-as-a-Service' platforms. The operation, coordinated by multiple law enforcement agencies, aims to help identify affected wallets, alert potential victims in a timely manner, and attempt to track and freeze stolen crypto assets to reduce further profits for criminals.
