According to CoinDesk analysis, Ethereum is facing a critical moment in its high-risk balancing strategy as pressures from scalability issues, quantum technology, and artificial intelligence continue to mount. In the first three months of 2026, the Ethereum ecosystem has faced multiple structural pressures, with Vitalik Buterin sharply criticizing the Layer2 scaling path, pointing out that many Rollup designs rely on centralized components and isolated environments, failing to truly inherit the mainnet's security guarantees, leading to ecosystem fragmentation and inconsistent security assumptions. Meanwhile, the Ethereum Foundation has incorporated resistance to quantum computing threats into its recent plans, advancing research on LeanVM and post-quantum signature schemes. Internally, the Ethereum Foundation's co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak has resigned after about a year in office, seen as a signal of internal realignment of priorities. Additionally, the foundation is accelerating its decentralized AI research efforts, aiming to position Ethereum as a 'trust layer' for AI systems to verify outputs, coordinate agents, and support machine-to-machine economic activities. Overall, Ethereum can no longer address these issues in isolation as they are becoming increasingly intertwined. The network is being pulled in multiple directions simultaneously, making it increasingly difficult to maintain balance. Unlike previous cycles, the current challenges are more about structure than short-term momentum. The short-term focus remains on mainnet scaling, with the planned Glamsterdam upgrade serving as a litmus test to determine if the Ethereum network can successfully transition into a robust, quantum-resistant 'trust layer' supporting the global AI economy.
