Major stock market indexes opened low on Monday as Dow Jones fell by 2.44%, S&P 500 dropped by nearly 2%, and Nasdaq decreased by 1.55%, extending the downswing since last Thursday.

The fall results from concerns over the new coronavirus outbreak in China’s capital, Beijing. Over the weekends, more than 36 new cases were detected in Beijing, all related to a local market, per BBC. A small-scale lockdown was shortly launched to control the Xinfadi market and 11 neighborhoods nearby. Raising numbers in some states may also have influenced the stocks’ decline.
