The European Commission Innovation Council has awarded 5 million euros to six blockchain projects crafting solutions for social good including fair trade, production process transparency, renewable energy, and financial inclusion, according to an announcement on Tuesday, June 30.

The council awarded 1 million euros to one project in each of the six areas outlined in the submission call. All of the winning projects are open-source. 176 applications were received from 43 countries and nearly 80% of projects came from start-ups.

The first winner listed on the announcement, WordProof, combats fake news using blockchain to validate that online content has not been edited since publication and creating a public trail of edits.
