An Irish charity fighting global poverty was just awarded a $1.1 million grant to fund a project delivering aid in the form of smart vouchers to disaster-struck areas, as reported by The Irish Times.

The charity, Oxfam, issues stablecoins to individuals affected by disaster, which allows for low cross border transaction fees. The project has already undergone one successful pilot program. The next phase will include 5,000 individuals and 500 vendors.

Oxfam says the program has cut aid delivery time down by 96% and transaction costs by 60%. The million dollar grant comes from the Blockchain Innovation Council after Oxfam won their competition Blockchains for Social Good.
