For several hours on July 1 a password-protected file containing personal data for more than one million Russian citizens was made available for public download on a government website, as reported by local outlet Meduza.

The data is potentially linked to Russia's recent use of blockchain to e-vote on Constitutional amendments which affected President Vladimir Putin's ability to run for another term.

The password to access the data was reportedly easy to crack and the information has been distributed through Telegram groups. In addition to the archive file, there was a non-password protected file containing the passport numbers for over a million voters.

The Russian government released a statement saying that the passport numbers were encoded and that passwords for the archived file were distributed through secure channels.
