The Supreme People’s Court of China published an official document on Wednesday, advocating to protect the right of ownership of digital currencies, virtual assets, and data.

The ownership of digital assets has been a controversial legal issue in China, where municipal courts previously treated cryptocurrencies as virtual properties. The new official guideline did not elaborate on specific classification.

The guideline follows after State Council’s call for accelerating China’s socialist market economy in May.
