In an August 20 press release, the U.S. government-funded Los Alamos National Laboratory claimed to have designed a new artificial intelligence algorithm to detect cryptojackers.

The AI system may be able to identify malicious codes that hijack supercomputers and steal their computing power in order to mine for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Monero.

“This type of software watchdog will soon be crucial to prevent cryptocurrency miners from hacking into high-performance computing facilities and stealing precious computing resources,”  project researcher Gopinath Chennupati said in the press release.
