European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said that a panel of euro-zone central bank officials will soon announce whether or not the bloc will start taking steps towards developing a digital version of its currency.

Lagarde spoke at a virtual event with Germany’s Bundesbank on Thursday, as reported by Bloomberg. During the event she said that creating a digital euro may prove crucial to ensuring the region does not get left behind as the global payments landscape evolves. This is the same argument that former CFTC chairman and founder of the Digital Dollar Project Chris Giancarlo has called upon to argue for the United States pursuing a central bank digital currency.

She announced that the findings of a Eurosystem task force are expected to be revealed to the public in coming weeks. The bank leader emphasized that her priority is to make sure citizens have choices and are not excluded from global transactions.
