The Riksbank, Sweden’s central bank, stated on Friday that it will sign a deal with consultancy firm Accenture to develop a pilot platform for a digital currency, known as the e-krona, according to Reuters.

“The primary objective of the e-krona pilot project is to broaden the bank’s understanding of the technological possibilities for the e-krona,” the Riksbank said in a statement.

Sweden has seen a rapid decline in cash use in recent years, which has led to Risbanks looking into developing their own digital currency as part of its role to promote a safe and efficient payment system.
