During the 2017 initial coin offering boom, ETH pulled back upwards of 20% seven times before its price peaked in January 2018, so far this cycle ETH has pulled back 20% only once, crypto research firm Messari noted in a tweet.

The current DeFi hype has often been compared to the initial coin offering craze of 2017 as new projects are frequently launching with promises of being the next big thing. 2017's ICO buzz ended with hundreds of coins folding — taking investor money with them — which has left some wary of the numerous food-themed DeFi projects cropping up.

Messari's tweet warns investors that the path upwards is unlikely to be smooth and that several large price drops should be expected. Crypto commentators replied to the tweet advising investors to keep the bigger picture in mind.
