Due to the current political unrest and protesting in Belarus after the country's purportedly rigged 2020 election, Apple has requested that Telegram, an encrypted messaging service, close three of its channels, according to Decrypt. The channels have been used in Belarus recently to expose the identites of law enforcement individuals working for the country's authoritarian regime, and Apple believes that continuing to expose these individuals could lead to further violence. Telegram, however, believes that the channels are useful resources for protestors and should not be shut down.
Apple's decision raises questions about the potential advantages of establishing decentralized, uncensored messaging services. Existing examples of such services include the blockchain app Voice, the community-owned social media platform Mastodon, and the Ethereum-based platform Peepeth.
