Crypto exchange Coinbase lost 5% of employees after a mission statement from CEO Brian Armstrong outlined an apolitical vision for the company, as reported by Coindesk.

Last week, Armstrong released a memo to the company advocating for a mission dedicated to building out crypto infrastructure rather than broader social issues. The memo caused debate among employees over how companies should respond to the political moment. Following the announcement, Coinbase offered a severance package to employees unhappy with the new mission.

In a companywide memo obtained by Coindesk, Armstrong stated that 60 of the exchange's 1,200 employees had accepted the severence. He clarified that employees were welcome to chat about current events and reaffirmed a commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace, but added that as a company they would not be engaging in broader activism.
