A digital Yuan reportedly made its debut in Shenzhen on October 14 and three other cities, Suzhou, Chengdu and Xiong’an, were also selected to pilot this state-backed digital currency. According to a survey conducted among residents in Xiong’an, the trial was only carried out on a small scale within limited groups, as local residents differed greatly in their attitude towards this programme. Some expressed their expectation while some showed complete ignorance of it. The trial is performed mainly through offline promotion and focuses on the catering industry. Foreign companies including Starbucks did not join the test.
