The New York State Department of Financial Services called for stronger cybersecurity measures in big tech companies to prevent the weaponization of social media platforms in a recent report responding to the massive Bitcoin Twitter hack on July 15.

In July, a 17-year-old hacker and several accomplices gained control of prominent Twitter accounts to advertise a Bitcoin scam. The hack gained widespread attention and called into question the security of the platform.

A report published on Wednesday, October 14 from the NYDFS stated that the hack demonstrated Twitter's weak security infrastructure. This weakness, the report argued, presents a threat to society given that influential social media platforms have been shown to manipulate markets and even elections.
