Javad Zarif, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Iran, stated in a tweet Tuesday night that Iran does not seek “escalation or war,” but will “defend” themselves against any aggression.

In the tweet Zarif defended the attack from Iran stating, “Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched.” And that they “do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves (Iran) against any aggression.”

This comment from the Foreign Affairs Minister seems to confirm what many correspondents feel, that this move was meant to apease Iran's citizens call for revenge while still giving the U.S. a chance to deescalate the situation and avoid war.
