Iran fired over a dozen missiles at two Iraqi military bases that housed U.S. Forces Tuesday night in retaliation to the airstrike that killed Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani, five days ago.

Iran launched over a dozen ballistic missiles that were aimed at the Al Asad and Erbil military bases, according to Iraqi security officials there have been no casualties at the bases.

President Donald Trump originally declined to address the nation but later sent out a tweet stating, “"All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning."

Javad Zarif, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Iran, stated in a tweet Tuesday night that Iran does not seek “escalation or war,” but will “defend” themselves against any aggression.

This call for de-escalation along with the Iranian missiles reportedly stricking parts of the base not populated by U.S. soldiers seem to confirm what many correspondents feel, that this move was meant to apease Iran's citizens call for revenge while still giving the U.S. a chance to deescalate the situation and avoid war.
