Cambodia has launched a blockchain-based platform for digital money transactions called Bakong, as reported by local outlet Dap-News.

The platform was built under an initiative run by the National Bank of Cambodia in collaboration with a number of private entities. Bankong is a payment tool allowing for fast and secure interbank transactions.

Cambodian central bank director general, Chea Serey, stated in an interview with The Phnom Penh Post he hopes Bankong would help promote social welfare and prevent covid-19 by allowing for touchless e-payments. Serey emphasized that Bankong is not a central bank digital currency.
