Mastercard President Michael Miebach said the company's cryptocurrency patents will give the company an edge once central bank digital currencies begin launching during a recent Q3 earnings call, as reported by Coindesk. 

Miebach highlighted that the patents will allow Mastercard to link CBDC transactions back through the company's network. He added that Mastercard is the leading payments player for crypto intellectual property.
