Pfizer Inc. filed with US regulators for an emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine, as reported by Bloomberg.

The request is seeking approval for an emergency shot aiming to aid immunization efforts against the virus which has brought global shutdowns and economic turmoil. The vaccine has been developed in partnership with BioNTech SE and has become the first to apply for emergency approval.

An emergency clearance would allow Americans to access the vaccine before it’s granted full approval. The vaccine would be administed according to priority with older populations and medical professionals recieving the shots first.

News broke earlier this week that Pfizer's vaccine was 95% effective during trials protecting people of all ages and ethnicities from developing symptoms. There have been no significant safety problems in the trial that includes nearly 44,000 participants.
