Bitcoin is rapidly approaching $19,000 for the first time in almost three years, setting crypto Twitter on fire as advocates predict the currency will top all-time highs.

Bitcoin is currently trading hands at $18,605 gaining 3.98% over the course of Friday. The currency's price has almost doubled this years, surfacing memories of the currency's 1,375% surge in 2017 which launched Bitcoin past the $20,000 mark.

Commentators attribute Bitcoin's recent rise to the wider institutional adoption this year including Square's investment, Paypal's adoption and Microstrategy naming BTC the company's reserve currency which sparked a flurry of investment from other businesses.

Expanding Bitcoin's investor base is the strongest path towards a higher price tag, many believe that institutional invesors joining the crypto space will also bring in a larger pool of retail investors.
