IBM is developing a blockchain proof-of-concept for the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the food safety hawk within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which will aid in the FSIS’s evaluation of how blockchain can optimize export certification systems.

According to an FSIS spokesperson, the $269,450 blockchain feasibility assessment will search out efficiencies in a process tainted by regulations and often complex, multi-country documentary requirements.

The FSIS is responsible for ensuring that United States' commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. The proof-of-concept will assess if blockchain can bring “increased immutability and visibility of critical documentation traversing across the supply chain,” according to the FSIS spokesperson.
