The Heritage Foundation, a conservative United States think tank, claims that instead of launching a central bank digital currency (CBDC), the government should allow the public to use the currencies they prefer, including private ones.

The commentary piece published on Feb. 12, states that Facebook’s Libra project “is just the latest reminder that providing money does not have to be a centralized function of government.” The report also argues that the concept of monetary sovereignty should be replaced with consumer sovereignty.

While one of the most common concerns with cryptocurrencies is the heighted risk of crime and fraud. The Heritage Foundation notes that “As with the existing payments system, any system based on cryptocurrencies can be policed by governments for fraud, consumer losses and illicit activity.”
