On July 22, Mikhail Kalinin of the Ethereum 2.0 client Teku, the core developers of the Ethereum Foundation Danny Ryan, and Vitalik Buterin initiated the EIP-3675 proposal to upgrade the consensus to Proof Of Stake.

The proposal, which is still a draft, stated that the EIP abandoned Proof of Work (PoW) and replaced it with a new Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus driven by the Beacon Chain

The core developer said the motivation for the proposal is that the Beacon Chain has been operating since December 2020, during which no safety and liveness failures have been detected. The long-term trouble-free operation proves the sustainability of the Beacon Chain system and it is ready to drive and become the security provider of the Ethereum mainnet.
