Georgian local media Interfax quoted Papuna Lezhava, deputy governor of the Central Bank, as reporting that the National Bank of Georgia will test digital lari, the nation's own Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) next year, a preliminary test will be for retail use. 

Lezhava said that digital lari is not a cryptocurrency, but another variant of cash, which will improve the efficiency of the payment system and expand financial inclusion. The bank said in May that it was exploring the possibility of developing CBDC.
