According to a document filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, Nike is registering a trademark for its "virtual goods."
The sports brand giant filed seven trademark and patent applications for its products, ranging from footwear, clothing, bags to Artwork, toys and accessories. One part defines trademark protection as “downloadable virtual goods, namely, computer programs featuring footwear, clothing, headwear, eyewear, bags, sports bags, backpacks, sports equipment, art, toys and accessories for use online and in online virtual worlds." which imply that the company may plan to sell its products as virtual goods or non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
In addition, Nike is hiring virtual material designers, who will partner with material design to create and visualize the most sophisticated and innovative virtual material concepts in the world using 3D tools such as Substance Designer. As mentioned in the job details, the position will "play a role in redefining our digital world, bringing us into the metaverse, and developing the capabilities of our team."
