The world’s biggest soccer star, Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7), joins the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, to release a series of non-fungible token (NFT) collections going on sale exclusively on the Binance NFT Platform, according to a Thursday announcement on their website.

Binance also took to Twitter to publicize the news saying, “This is your opportunity to own an iconic piece of sports history and join CR7's Web3 community.”

The soccer legend himself also got on Twitter to make the announcement official saying, “Together we’ll give you the opportunity to own an iconic piece of sports history.”

This multi-year partnership aims to bring Rolando to Web3 and give his fans an introduction to the quickly evolving, ever-changing field through a series of NFT collections. The first collection will be released later this year and feature designs created in collaboration with the Portuguese international.

Not only is CR7 a global soccer superstar, but he is a global star that has transcended the realm of soccer to appear in popular culture. In fact, Ronaldo is the second-most followed account on instagram with 459 million followers, only behind Instagram’s verified Instagram account with 523 million followers.

In other words, Ronaldo is the most followed person on the social media platform. The next closest person is Kyle Jenner with 352 million followers. That means Ronaldo beats Jenner in terms of followers by more than 100 million people.

The world’s arguable soccer GOAT (greatest of all time) joins a fellow GOAT in the likes of Wayne Gretzky, and his NFT collection featured on EBay. The National Basketball Association (NBA) recently issued their own series of 18,000 NFTs for the NBA playoffs that recently culminated with the Golden State Warriors winning the championship.

Ronaldo also joins other professional athletes who have joined NFT marketplaces on their own to release their own NFTs, including James Harden, Devin Booker and Tom Brady. Brady also owns his own NFT platform named Autograph.

Furthermore, there are some players who do not have their own NFT collaborations with marketplaces, but have endorsed the digital art form by either purchasing their own NFTs, or wearing NFT-related merchandise.

The vast world of digital art and NFTs is in its infancy and there is no telling where it will lead to. One thing is clear, that more and more athletes, actors, singers and stars are joining the movement.
